Suborbital  is a working title for an ongoing body of research I have been undertaking since beginning my practice-based PhD at the University of Leeds in 2023. During this first year, I have been experimenting mainly with paper, clay and video, installing these works together to form sensual narratives that might ask questions about the relationship between motherhood and landscape in the Anthropocene. The sculptures incorporate local materials such as coal, ochre and foraged clay from the fields around my home, and the videos weave together site-specific sound recordings, music and film footage, with poetry that further deepens the historical sense of loss I experience as a mother in an age of ecological crisis.
